Bronze Training Group Program

Victoria August 13, 1999 - Junior and developmental riders to be eligible for annual program of coaching and athlete services at PacificSport National Cycling Centre.

Top young cycling prospects from across Canada will be eligible for a new developmental program to be offered this fall at the PacificSport National Cycling Centre in Victoria. The program was announced today by former Olympic champion Yury Kashirin, who is the National Team Coach, and Director of the PacificSport National Cycling Centre. Kashirin said applications will be accepted immediately for a limited number of openings in the PacificSport National Cycling Sport BRONZE TRAINING GROUP.

"We are committed to providing world-class athlete services, quality coaching and long term sport development programs as part of PacifcSport." said Kashirin. "This new offering allows us to expand our reach and help identify and develop future national team talent for Canada."

"This program will allow us to increase the level of support for qualified riders. " added Kashirin. "We believe there are great benefits from frequent contacts between promising riders and high level coaches, and we want to open the door each year to more motivated riders."

As head coach and director of the centre, Yury Kashirin will supervise the program, with Assistant National Coach Steve Lund as the lead coach.

"We have had great success with our first Talent ID program last fall which brought athletes like Erica Drew (National Track, silver, bronze, Western Canada Games, bronze and gold), Erinne Willock (National Track, bronze, Western Canada Games, gold), and Claire Townsend (MTB Canada Cup, currently 4th overall), to the Center. Now, we want to make a greater commitment to athletes who are ready."

The program is partly funded by the Province of BC Regional Training Centre program, the PacificSport national Cycling Centre and coaching fees. "We expect to announce scholarships for interested athletes shortly." said Bill Fosdick, Chair of the Regional Training Centre Management Committee.
