The cross-country races have begun! The weather is perfect - hot and sunny - and the trails are very hard and dry, so the racing should be fast. The Elite men are doing 6 laps, the Elite women 5 and the Junior Expert men 4. One of the most interesting races should be the women, given the absence of perennial favourite Alison Sydor (in France doing the women's Tour). Chrissy Redden and Lesley Tomlinson are the favourites, but melanie Dorion and Amber Chorney could pull off an upset.
The men have just come through at the 3/4 mark of their first lap, with Andreas Hestler holding a 16 second lead on Chris Sheppard, Eric Tourville and Seamus McGrath. The rest of the field is about 10 seconds back.
At the same point Chrissy Redden has already opened up a 23 second lead on Lesley Tomlinson, with Melanie McQuaid another 5 seconds back.
