News from the OCA for the week of April 5th

NCCP Community Initiation (CI) Learning Facilitator Course Announced - April 16 -17

The OCA in partnership with the CCA is hosting a Community Initiation (CI) Learning Facilitator Course in Ontario in April.

The date is April 16-17, 2010 (Friday and Saturday) and the course would take place at Joyride Bike park in Markham, Ontario.

Community Cycling- Initiation is the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) context for coaches who will primarily work with novice, pre-competitive cyclists at the community level. These participants will likely be children in the FUNdamentals to early Train to Train stages of long-term athlete development (LTAD). We expect these participants to be able to ride a bicycle, be interested in improving their skills, and open to trying a competitive experience.

Community Cycling- Initiation cyclists will usually participate 1 to 3 times per week. Coaches will likely be volunteers, parents, and recreation and summer camp leaders, so the program is simple, based on a number of pre-designed lesson plans, and adaptable to the varying skill and ability levels of participants. The focus of the program will be on having participants develop skills which are basic to MTB, BMX, and Road, in a controlled, off-road, off-trail setting such as a sport field or parking lot. This will help minimize liability issues for those delivering the program, making it more acceptable to municipal recreation departments and schools.

OCA Endurance Camp - South Carolina - Wrap Up Report

2010 was a very great year for the athletes and coaches who attended the annual training camp amongst the hills and dales of SC. Expect Excellence was the theme of the camp building upon last years successes on the road, track and trails. Team Ontario did not disappoint during the 9 days of training.

Most of the legendary climbs were tackled with the exception of a spin on the Blue Ridge Parkway. On the last day, most rode up to the Parkway to find it closed to traffic. Beckey Mountain rounded out that ride for the longest group while others did the grind up Old Toxaway. Whitewater Falls, Highlands, Caesars Head, Sassafrass and every hill in between was ridden by the visitors from Ontario during our stay.

OCA Spring BMX Camp

Gotta love these Florida mornings! Day 3 brought us some nippy wake-up weather, but warmed up with the sun shining as we started our morning sprints.

We had a great sprint session, with every athlete giving it their all. An assortment of 25 m, 50 m, and interval sprints were done.

After our great morning sprint session, we cooled down with some stretches, and some laps around the alligator pit. Some of us watched a movie, some of us chilled poolside, some of us took a power nap.

After a few hours of down time, we went out to the driveway for a timed obstacle course. The top three were Corey Walsh, Kyle Lourensson, and Braden Wood respectively, with everyone else right behind.
