Getting closer...
The Tropheo Montecosaro on Saturday was won by Julio Perrez (SC Granatelli), who recorded his 4th seasonal victory. The Mexican climbing phenom broke away solo with 25km to go on the hilly circuit, and held a minute gap until the finish. I tried to organize the 10 rider chase group, but it seemed that all were content to race for 2nd place, and Perez kept his margin. Frustrated with the lack of cohesion in the group, I attacked at 5km to go (at the foot of the finishing climb), and distanced myself from the riders behind, and took back a handful of seconds on Julio. I finished second, and Daniele Fonfoni (Monturano) third.
At Sunday's GC Millionaria (UCI 1/6), an international field was once again embarassed by Signor Perez, as he made another long-shot. The 144 km event consisted of ascending and descending a series of 3-6km climbs, 12 in total. Usually decided by attrition, and a solid attack on the final climb, the event this year was led (alone or in a break) by Perez for nearly 100km, and he would win it by over 3 and a half minutes over his teammate Francesco Magni. I finished 9th., feeling a bit tired from yesterday's event, and having been subjected to the same non-cooperation in chasing as on Saturday.
Arrivederci,
Paul Kelly
