For recent Tour de California stage winner and Garmin Tour de France team member Ryder Hesjedal, the ProCity Racing Bear Mountain Hill Climb was supposed to be a “ride in the park-way”. And it was, but not without a few Victoria challengers driving to upset Canada’s top ranked professional cyclist.

Hesjedal beat 89 other riders up the first leg of the Bob W. Cameron Law Cycling Series with a seven minutes and five-second ride in the three-kilometre time trial up a grueling 10 per cent grade to reach the mountain summit. Ryder’s next challenge – the Tim Hortons Timbit Challenge on Sunday will he will join more than a hundred kids in a lap around Bastion Square.

Victoria’s Rob Britton, 2007 Overall BC Cup Series and 2007 BC Time Trial Champion, finished second in 7:22. Britton recently signed with the U.S. Bissell Pro Racing team after being “scouted” at last year’s Mount Hood Cycling Classic where he won a stage and finished fifth in the general classification. Victoria’s Corey Wallace (Kona Factory) was third in 7:42.

On the women’s side, Beijing Olympian Erinne Willock was the top female, climbing to the finish in eight minutes, 33 seconds. Aviawest/Blue Competition Cycles Megan Rathwell was second in 9:33 and Russ Hay’s Bike Shop Shailie Sansbrook was third in 9:56.
