Stage 5: Ville de Québec, 127.6 km

The start was delayed for 15 min to ensure that the course was clear of vehicles

They will do 12 11 laps of the 11.6 k  course but the 1st lap will be neutral

This is the same course that will be used for this fall's Pro Tour and the organizers and officials are a bit apprehensive.  There is a new section added to the  NE corner of the course that sends the riders through the narrow streets of Old Quebec.  This area has cobbled streets, sharp turns and many opportunities for crashes.

It is hot and sunny , 27 C with a few clouds pasing over.  Humidity makes the 'actual 'temp mid 30's

After 1 lap of the course the riders will come to a halt at the start/finish line and restart for an additional 11 laps

Hector Gonzalez Baeza (Heraklio-Murcia) has attacked and has an 8 sec gap

 

 

1:00 pm

 

Nathan O'Neil (Bahati Foundation) has joined Gonzalez and they now have 10 sec.  Peloton is splitting up on climb

 

1:06 pm

 

Break is caught

 

1st Sprint and Andrew Pinfold (Unitedhealthcare p/b Maxxis) takes it

 

Crash an the bottom of the descent has taken down 8 riders.  They are all getting back up and mechanics are working on their bikes. Nic Hamilton (Canadian National Team) was one of the riders

 

Good spectator turn out in the old City

A group away:  Christopher Jones (Team Type 1),  Danny Summerhill (Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin U23) and Mancebo (Heraklio-Murcia) with a gap of 55 seconds along the "bottom" of the course - along the river.  Tim Nederlof (Global Cycling Team ) is chasing

At the end of lap 3 they have a gap of 40 sec

Lucas Euser (Spidertech p/b Planet Energy) and Chad Beyer (BMC Racing Team) are chasing

 

Hamilton has dropped out after the crash

Break has nearly a min on peloton

 

1:48 pm

On the descent on Lap 5 - break now 5 riders has a gap of 1:10

Break:  Summerhill, Euser, Beyer, Mancebo, Rabou and they have 2:15 now on the peloton

Arnaud Papillon (Équipe Québec) is trying to bridge and is 1:15 down on leaders.  Peloton is 2:15 behind leaders

 

2:17 pm

 

Keir Plaice (Canadian National) and André Tremblay (Équipe Québec) have dropped off back of peloton

 

Fly V is at the front pushing the pace - Mancebo (13th in GC) in break is a threat to Day's lead

Lap 7 and the gap is 1:45

 

2:38 pm

 

Lap 8 and gap is 1:30

Start of Lap 9.  Gap to pelton is 1:20 and Mancebo can be seen encouraging the other members of the break to work

On the descent and the gap to the pelton is 1:30.  Maint Berkenbosch (Global Cycling Team) is attempting a bridge up

Euser is gettting dropped on the climb and then getting back on over the top

 

The Garmin Team has gone to the front and setting up a series of attacks

 

3:11 pm

 

2 to go and the gap is 55 sec

 

3:18 pm

 

At the base of the climb on lap 10 and tee gap is 45 sec

 

3:21 pm

 

Jamie Sparling (Canadian National Team) is bridging up from the peloton and is 15 seconds to the leaders - 30 sec from peloton

 

3:27 pm

Sparling has caught the leaders.  The peloton is at 30 sec now

 

3:30 pm

 

They are starting the last lap and the gap is just 12 seconds

 

3:35 pm

 

Gap is holding at  15 sec

 

3:37 pm

Sparlling has attacked of the front and has 5 sec on lead group.  Peloton has dropped back to 30 sec

 

 

3:40 pm

 

Spartling now has a 10 sec gap

 

3:45 pm

 

Day had a flat and dropped off the back of the bunch but rec'd a quick repair and was back in teh peloton

 

Sparling has been caught and the bunch is  back together again and they are heading to the line
