The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is pleased to unveil the long list of Canadian cyclists who have been selected to participate at the two prestigious UCI Pro-Tour events, to be held in Québec City on September 10th, and Montreal on September 12th.
These two events, to be held in Canada for the next five years, have significant importance for the continued development of cycling in Canada, especially for road cycling, as it will provide a direct access for our cycling enthusiasts to the biggest names in international cycling.
The Canadian National Team powered by SpiderTech will be comprised of different riders for both events. The long list of athletes includes Canada's top cyclists, notably the current Canadian Champion, Will Routley. The short-listed athletes will be made public closer to the events, in August.
"We are fortunate to have SpiderTech stepping up and sponsoring the national team for both ProTour events," said Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer of the Canadian Cycling Association.
"This partnership between the CCA and SpiderTech will play a big role in the development of young cyclists across Canada. The potential addition of a Canadian-based Pro-Team on the UCI Tour will greatly improve our talent base."
In connection with the SpiderTech support, Steve Bauer will act as Team Manager of the Canadian team in both ProTour events. National Team Road Coach Vincent Jourdain will provide additional support to Bauer and his team.
Steve Bauer joined the National Team in 1977, with whom he rode for seven years. Throughout his time with the National program, he won the National Road Championships three consecutive years - 1981, 1982 and 1983. In 1984 Bauer won the silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games as part of the Canadian team, before turning professional and going on to a stellar professional career.
This unique partnership between the CCA and SpiderTech will play a great part in developing young cycling talent in Canada.
"The CCA and the Grand Prix Cycliste Pro-Tour have closely collaborated to enable the optimal participation of Canadian riders in these two races," added Landry.
On Saturday, September 11th in Montreal, the CCA will provide an exclusive opportunity for cyclist enthusiasts to ride with Steve Bauer, Vincent Jourdain and members of Canada's National Team. Participants will be provided within an extensive hospitality program for the first fifty persons that register for this limited event.
Registration for the program will be available via a special website currently being prepared. Further information can be provided by contacting Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the CCA.
