Working to attract some of the best cycling talent in North America, the RBC GranFondo Whistler announced today that there will be $12,000 in prizing for the Giro portion of the first ever RBC GranFondo Whistler cycling event, to be held on September 11th, along the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway.
The challenging 120 kilometre course from Vancouver to Whistler gives participants in the Giro (open to licensed Category 1/2/3 racers) the opportunity to compete for a portion of the purse split amongst the first, second and third place ($3,000, $2,000 and$1,000, respectively) on both the men's and women's sides.
While the RBC GranFondo Whistler has been filled to capacity since March, there remain some spots still open in the Giro. With a separate start ahead of the main GranFondo (the final race in the 2010 BC Cup series), Giro riders will receive full neutral support and a dedicated cycling lane on the much-lauded Sea to Sky Highway.
Donated by the St. Regis Hotel in Vancouver, the Giro purse is part of a larger financial commitment the St. Regis has made to prizing for the event.
"We're thrilled to have the St. Regis come on board," said Neil McKinnon, GranFondo Canada co-founder. "The prizing they're contributing will go a long way to making this an even more exciting and high-stakes event."
Category 1/2/3 riders can visit the RBC GranFondo Whistler website at www.rbcgranfondowhistler.com for more details, and are reminded that prices for the Giro increase on July 1st.
