Lars Michaelsen (Francaise des Jeux), the winner of stage one added a third stage victory to his team‚s total on today‚s 179 kilometre stage from Montreal to Ottawa.
After yesterday‚s tough stage on Mont Royal (and possibly because the heavy rain that fell for most of the stage), the peleton seemed content to cruise. At the 50 kilometre mark Ludovic Capelle and Stephane Cueff of the Home Market Team tried to put some distance on the field, but gave up after 15 kilometres when they could gain no more than 40 seconds.
Finally, with some 20 kilometres left in the stage, the winner of the opening stage - Lars Michaelsen (Francaise de Jeux) spearheaded a breakaway of 6 riders that managed to shake things up. In the break with Michaelsen were Volker Ordowski (Gerolsteiner), Jaroslav Bilek (Wustenrot-ZVVZ), Noam Lelarge (French National), American Michael Sayers (Mercury) and Canadian Brian Walton (Saturn). The breakaways managed to stay 16 seconds ahead of the fast closing field at the finish. with Michaelsen easily outdistanced his competitors. Gord Fraser, Mercury‚s sprinter who has already won two stages, was denied the chance to win infront of his hometown friends and family when he crashed with about 20 kilometres to go.
