Downhill seeding runs took place today on a course viewed as an old school Downhill. The course has tight technical switchback turns at the top, and less technical but FAST FAST FAST with burmed corners the rest of the way down. The course is nowhere close to Bromont or Ste. Anne for technical challenge, but is still fun and tough in a scary fast sort of way.

The course was made a little more difficult by rain yesterday and overnight, but the course did dry out somewhat by the start of the seeding runs. The fastest Canadians in the seeding runs were Rob Hewitt in 43rd place and Tera Meade in 21st place for men's and woman's pros. Hopefully a number of Canadian (myself included) have worked out their mistakes and will have fast clean runs on Saturday. I seeded 33rd today, and have plans of doing much better on Saturday.

OCA Cyclo-Cross Clinic

Dufferin Street, approx 1km south of Steeles. Meet in the parking lot on the east side of Dufferin st.

The OCA will be having a cyclo-cross clinic hosted by Christian Hansen and Ralph Neumann. The clinic will focus on dismounting, remounting, running with the bike, cross bike set-up and training advice. Beginners are welcome and also those people who wish to refine their cross technique. Helmets are MANDATORY. Cyclo-Cross bikes are recommended, but mountain bikes or road bikes will be acceptable also. Mtb shoes and pedals should are strongly recommended. The clinic will last approximately 2 hrs.

Follow Up To Donna Singer Case

Here is a follow up to the horrifying story about a Saskatchewan school teacher who plowed into a cyclist with her car and killed him.

SASKATOON, SK (CANADA) A Regina, Saskatchewan teacher who struck and killed a cyclist two years ago has reached a settlement with her employer.

On September 8, the Regina School Division agreed to pay Donna Singer seven months back pay. The board had earlier decided to let her keep her pension.

The school board suspended Singer after the June 4, 1997 collision. Donald Jaques died when he was struck by Singer's car while he was riding with his wife and members of the Wascana Freewheelers cycling club.

Following the collision, Singer was charged with impaired driving causing death. A breath test showed she had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her blood. The test was thrown out of court because of mistakes made by the police. Singer was found not guilty.

"Mrs. Singer, two hours later, she's got the equivalent of a bottle and 3/4 of wine in her still," said Jaques' son, Kevin, a Regina lawyer, after the verdict.

Singer never checked to see if she could help Donald Jaques, or use one of the two cell phones she had with her to call for help for the fatally injured cyclist, he said.

"At the scene she's using her cell phone," said Kevin Jaques. "She wasn't calling 9-1-1. She was trying to get herself out of a jam."

On June 10, 1999, the school board fired Singer for gross misconduct. "Driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in a fatal accident and her demeanour and behaviour subsequent to that" did not set a good example for children, said board chairman John Conway.

Singer, who had worked as an elementary school teacher for nearly 30 years, appealed the dismissal. The out-of-court settlement was reached last week.
