Annie Ewart and Kris Dahl Lead Canadian Cyclists in Time Trial at World Junior Championships

Ewar posts 20th fastest time; Dhal is 24th

 Annie Ewart (Brentwood Bay, BC) and Kris Dahl (Calgary, AB) posted Canada’s fastest times in the Time Individual Trial as the 2010 UCI Road World Junior championships kicked off today in Offida, Italy.

Ewart completed the 15.1 kilometre course which started in Acquaviva to finish in Offida with a time of 24 minutes, 02.88 seconds.

Ukrainian rider Cana Solovei posted the fastest time of the day for the World title, stopping the clock at 21 minutes 30.36 seconds. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France won the silver medal trailing Solovei by a mere 5.13 seconds, while Australian rider Amy Cure took the bronze medal.

Julia Garnet (Saskatoon, SK), the Canadian Road Champion in Junior Women’s Time Trial, was 23rd.

In men’s racing, Kris Dahl posted the fastest Canadian time stopping the clock at 42 minutes 33.34 seconds on the loop course of 28.5 kilometres, good for the 24th rank.

Luxembourg’s rider Bob Jungles took the gold medal with a time of 40 minutes 05.96 seconds, dominating the race with a 27-second lead over his closest competitor, German Jasha Sutterland in second place. American rider Lawson Craddock took the third place, less than one second behind the silver medalist.

Canada’s Stewart Wight (Riverview, NB), the Canadian Road champion in Junior Men’s Time Trial, did not finish the race.

A total of 57 riders took part in the Time Trial event for the men’s race and 31 took the start in the Women’s race.  The men rode to an average speed of 42.128 km/h, while the lady cruised at average speeds of 42.644 km/h.

The 2010 UCI Road World Junior Championships continue on Sunday with the traditional mass start Road race. The women will kick things off at 10am, while the men’s will race for gold at 2pm.

Note;  Stuart Wight had a huge crash at high speed on the descent and fell over an 8 metre embankment!  He has a fractured nose, with 6 stitches and he's now sporting a new cast for torn ligaments in his knee.  He's allowed to remove the neck brace in the morning...... BTW Won't be racing the road race
