The 2010 Para-cycling world championships began this evening with the Opening Ceremonies in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. Over 500 athletes from 30-plus nations around the world have traveled to this small community to compete for time trial and road race titles. Para athlete Chantal Petitclerc gave a well-received and inspiring speech to the gathered athletes. Competition begins tomorrow with the time trial races for Women's bicycles (C1 - C5), Tricycle and Handcycle all take place on the 11.4 kilometre circuit that will be used for all events. Each category will do either one or two laps of the circuit.
