Taiwan Earthquake

By now, you have probably heard about the horrific earthquake that hit Taiwan just before 2:00 am (local time). While the capital of Taipei was affected (particularly with one hotel collapsing), the epicentre was further south, around Taichung. Taichung is the centre of the Taiwanese bicycle industry, with companies such as Giant, Diamondback, Haro, Kinesis, etc. all located there. Given that Taiwan is the largest exporter of bikes in the world, the potential damage to the bike industry is substantial. We have received word that, so far, the word is good for the bicycle industry. This information came secondhand, from someone who was contacted by cellphone by Haro. The contact says that Haro escaped damage, as did fork manufacturer Kinesis. The main problem now is the lack of electric, closed roads so that they can not receive parts from suppliers, etc. We will pass on more information as it becomes available.

Charles Dionne won yesterday‚s final stage of the Tour de Hokkaido, a criterium decided by points, by accumulating almost twice as many points as the second placed rider. The Irish team, who before the stage had decided to make a run at the overall general classification and leave the points standings to us, unfortunately failed to take advantage of the intermediate sprint time bonuses and saw no improvement in their placings.

Even though the overall standings were very close coming into the stage (the first six riders were covered by just 16 seconds, and the first ten by less than a minute), the race resulted in a status quo. Ken Hashikawa of the Bridgestone Anchor team defended his slim, seven-second margin to take the overall win. The biggest shuffle was in the points standings: Charles Dionne vaulted from fourth to first overall after accumulating more points in one stage than in the rest of the tour.

The final stage was the highlight of the Tour for the Canadian team. Unfortunately, the rest of the race didn‚t go all that well. The team had been dealt a blow when Pascal Choquette was forced to quit due to a wrist injury in the first stage, and our boys missed a couple of crucial moves later in the race. However, the stage and points win were what we needed to make the Tour a positive experience. - Kris Westwood
