Camp White Pine to Haliburton Forest – 58km

The highly anticipated final stage of Crank the Shield brought smiles, joy and fulfillment to all the participants. The racers would start the day with a 10 kilometre neutral ride from camp White Pine to the base of Sir Sam’s Ski Resort. The riders were greeted by the open arms of the staff of Sir Sam’s. The start of the stage had the riders tackle fast flowing single track, traversing the side of the ski hill.

Once again the race was led out by the two person teams of Zandstra/Wagler (3 Rox Racing) and Glassford/Batty (Trek Canada). The overall title would be battled out on the final stage of CTS. The pace shadowed a Canada Cup or Ontario Cup; the riders were willing to leave everything on the course. At the end of the day Zandstra/Wagler would edge out their gritty opponents completing the stage in 2:41:00.  “One of the toughest races I have ever done, but also one the coolest.” Exclaimed Zandstra. Andrew Watson (Norco), and Kate Aardal continued their winning ways, as both claimed the overall victories in the Solo Male and Solo Female divisions.

After tough conditions on Stage 2, many riders came across the line at Haliburton Forest raving about Stage 3. Stage 3 included many of the infamous singletracks at Haliburton Forest, and also brand new singletrack at Sir Sam’s. This year’s event was definitely a challenge for many participants. However, overall many riders - including 2-time MTB Olympian Seamus McGrath thoroughly enjoyed the 235 km, 3-day mountain bike stage race.
