We Have A Winner!
Finally, a correct answer to our trivia question of the day: What Does CCM stand for? The most common answer was very close - Canadian Cycle & Motor. However, the correct answer is Canada Cycle & Motor. Orlando Goveia was one of two people to get it right - and the first by 23 minutes. He gets a copy of the 1998 MTB World Championships video.
Now for some history on Canada's most famous bicycle brand. Canada Cycle & Motor Company was formed in 1899 in response to an amalgamation of American bicycle manufacturers (into the American Bicycle Company) that threatened to enter the Canadian market (sound familiar...). 5 major Canadian bicycle companies floated a public stock offering to form CCM. The company prospered until the 1970's, when cheap imports undermined the demand for low end bikes that was the mainstay of CCM's production (gee, history repeats yet again...). CCM also underwent periodic labour strife, driving up the cost of production. In January of 1983, CCM was placed into bankruptcy. Quebec-based bicycle manufacturer Pro-Cycle purchased the assets, keeping the bicycle rights, and selling off the hockey division.
Tune in tomorrow for the next chance to win. Noon EDT is when the question goes up.
