December 16/10 18:09 pm - Christmas Gifts for Cyclists - Part 2

In Part 2 of our Gifts for Cyclists suggestions, we have two items. Either of these would make a cyclist happy to see under the tree...

Trelock Manufaktur Lock

Every rider needs a lock for the times they have to leave their bike unattended - particularly if you use it for urban transportation. There is no reason that this lock cannot be stylish at the same time, and the Trelock Manufaktur certainly fits this bill.

lockTrelock is a German company just starting to move into Canada, who make a wide range of locking systems, but it is this top-of-the-line model which caught our eye. Packaged in a wooden box, and with a tooled leather carry case that mounts to the frame (either on bottle braze-ons or with supplied clamps), the folding lock has inlaided leather on each steel section. It will hold your bike secure in front of that sidewalk bistro you frequent...

Suggested retail: $180. Currently available at Urbane Cyclist in Toronto.

Shimano XTR

This is if you have been really, REALLY good... Shimano introduced the fifth generation of their flagship XTR mountain bike group to the press in August, including our Editor. Our full review from that session can be read here.

At the time, we called it the best MTB group Shimano has ever produced, with special kudos going to the braking system and the flexibility of options for everything from cross-country racing (Race) to all-mountain/freeride use (Trail). Since then, we have had a chance to put in more time on the group (by multiple riders), and our opinion hasn't changed - this sets a new standard for performance. (We will have a more detailed review of XTR after extended use in the near future).

XTR

If you (or someone you know) is really deserving, XTR can be yours for $2700 - $3200 without wheels, hubs and pedals, depending upon the setup. If that is a little outside of your budget, consider the Trail version of the pedals, which offer an excellent platform for all-around riding. Visit your local dealer for more details.
