Organizers Open Time Trial as Single Event
Race the Ridge Stage Race, Maple Ridge’s premier cycling event presented by Local Ride Bike Shop, is pleased to announce that the scenic and challenging 22km individual time trial in Golden Ears Provincial Park on May 7 is open for registration as a single event to a limited field of 60 riders, giving more cyclists the opportunity to experience the beautiful course.
“The Golden Ears route is one of the most stunning time trial courses in the country,” said Barry Lyster, race organizer and owner of Local Ride Bike Shop. “Opening it to riders who just want to test themselves against the clock and not commit to the other two grueling stages is a great way to make Race the Ridge more accessible to a bigger cross section of cyclists.”
The field for time trial only riders will be capped at a maximum of 60 participants.
The rolling out-and-back course is walled by towering cedar trees and skirted by rushing streams, all set against a spectacular mountain backdrop. Of course, racers will have little time to enjoy their surroundings as they push the limits of legs and lungs to log the fastest time.
“This time trial is ideal for riders who are training for bigger events later in the season, like a triathlon or a Gran Fondo,” said Lyster. “It’s a perfect way to gauge fitness and test the legs and bike setup in a race situation.”
The time trial kicks off the Race the Ridge Stage Race on Saturday morning, after which stage race riders will attempt to recharge in time for the most spectacular event of the weekend - the Town Core Criterium.
The fast-paced, aggressive circuit race in the heart of downtown Maple Ridge is unique, because spectators can watch nearly the entire battle unfold from a single vantage point with front-row views as riders take risks to win.
In traditional stage racing style, the final event of the weekend will be a grueling road race. On Sunday, May 8, Race the Ridge will once again see competitors challenge the 10km Thorn Hill course, using strategy, smarts, and pure strength as they vie for the win over multiple laps of this hilly circuit.
As always, Race the Ridge will continue its important mandate to develop the next generation of cyclists by offering a full Youth Stage Race with three stages for youth under 17 and a free kid’s race on Saturday, May 7.
