May 9/11 13:09 pm - Giro Stage 3 Marred by Tragic Accident

The third stage of the Giro d'Italia saw David Millar (Garmin-Cervelo) take over the race lead from Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad), but the racing was overshadowed by the tragic death of 26 year Belgian rider Wouter Weylandt of Leopard-Trek.

Weylandt crashed on the descent after the first climb of the day (Passo del Bocco), and was evacuated to hospital by helicopter after receiving roadside assistance. However, he was pronounced dead at the hospital after doctors were unable to revive him. The riders were not informed until after the stage, when the podium ceremonies were cancelled.

"Today, our teammate and friend Wouter Weylandt passed away after a crash on the third stage of the Giro d'Italia," said Leopard-Trek Manager Brian Nygaard in a statement.

"The team is left in a state of shock and sadness and we send all our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Wouter.

"This is a difficult day for cycling and for our team, and we should all seek support and strength in the people close to us."

The team website has been replaced with a single page, showing a photo of Weylandt.

Weylandt's death is the first at the Giro since 1986, when Emilio Ravasio crashed in the first stage.
