May 17/11 22:26 pm - Tour of California: Stage 3 report and full results

Posted by Editoress on 05/17/11

Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California (AToC) saw Team Sky take their second stage win in a row, with Greg Henderson replacing team mate Ben Swift on the top step of the podium, and taking over the leader's jersey.  SpiderTech's Keven Lacombe was again the top Canadian finisher, in sixth place.

The 196 kilometre stage from Auburn to Modesto took the peloton through cattle country and vineyards, and the relatively flat terrain virtually insured a sprint finish.  However, it was not an easy day, with the riders haveing to battle constant head or cross winds, as well as regulary rain squalls.

The expected break went straight from the gun, with seven riders initially heading up the road, including Canadian Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare).  Also in the break were: Jan Bárta (Team NetApp), Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell Cycling), William Dickison (Jelly Belly), Phillip Gaimon (Kenda/5-hour Energy), James Driscoll (Jamis-Sutter Home) and Mike Creed (Kelly Benefit Strategies).

The break quickly opened up a sizable gap, and were nearly seven minutes up after 60 kilometres.  Bárta took the top points and time bonuses at both of the first two intermediate sprints, while Meier was second in the second sprint and won the third.

The top teams decided that the gap was big enough and it stablized at about six minutes, until the distance and wind began to take its toll, with Gaimon dropping off the lead group.  The rest of the group continued to fight, with Meier doing much of the work at the front.  However, HTC-Highroad, Sky and Garmin-Cervelo decided enough was enough, and the gap began to come down steadily, to four minutes with 70 kilometres remaining.

At the third intermediate sprint, Bárta counterattacked the leaders, and only Jacques-Maynes was able to respond.  The pair gained 30 seconds on the others but, inexorably, the peloton was pulling them back.  They received a brief reprieve when crosswinds broke the field into echelons, but the peloton regrouped and everyone was together with 15 kilometres to go - seven kilometres before the race hit the finishing circuit in Modesto for two laps.

SpiderTech at the front

SpiderTech went to the front for the first lap, with Svein Tuft leading the field for almost an entire lap.  The lap was marred by a crash that took down Jens Voigt (Leopard-Trek), Will Dugan (TT1) and Jesus Del Montes (NetApp).  All three finished the race, but Voigt was favouring his shoulder.

SpiderTech was still at the front as the field began the final lap, but Saxo Bank was moving up for JJ Haedo, as was Sky for race leader Swift and Garmin-Cervelo for world champion Thor Hushovd.

Henderson started his sprint nearly 400 metres out, expecting Swift to come by, but no one did, and Henderson managed to extend his kick all the way to the line, followed by Haedo and Hushovd.  Lacombe finished sixth in the sprint, and is now seventh in the overall standings, ten seconds back of Henderson.

"It was a day to expect to have all hands on deck with cross wind sections. It was our plan to control the front of the peloton entering onto the circuit. We did a few kilometres safe at the front, and got swamped by Saxo Bank with less than a lap to go. At that point, it was the work of Zach, Martin and Kevin," said team captain Svein Tuft. "The guys rode very well as a team riding and executing the plan."

"We went for it again today for Keven. The game plan was to be patient, all day and use all our resources for the final sprint. The guys did an amazing job in front in the final two laps, and Keven finished in an excellent sixth place," said team director Steve Bauer. "The team coherence is very good, and the atmosphere is excellent. Now, it's time for our climbers Pat McCarty and Lucas Euser."

Race Notes

- Tomorrow it is the turn of the climbers, with a 132 kilometre stage that concludes with a mountain top finish on the well known Sierra Road climb.  This stage should completely rearrange the classification, and provide the first look at who the serious contenders are for the overall title.
