It will not be official until the UCI Management Committee meets in September, but the UCI has 'unofficially' awarded the 2014 Road Worlds to Ponferrada, Spain, after a statement today:
"the file received from the city of Ponferrada, in Spain, has been judged the best with a view to awarding the organisation of the 2014 UCI Road World Championships.
The decision taken at this stage of the evaluation procedure comes after a rigorous assessment by the relevant UCI services of all the elements - particularly sporting and economic - of the different candidatures.
As a result, the UCI has decided to propose only the candidature of Ponferrada to its Management Committee, at its meeting in Copenhagen (Denmark) in September, for the organisation of the 2014 edition of the World Championships."
Ponferrada is in the northwest corner of Spain. The city is also under consideration for the 2015 Para-cycling Road Worlds.
At the Management Committee meeting in September, the location of the 2015 Road Worlds will also be announced. After the withdrawal of Quebec City, there are two candidates: Oman and the American city of Richmond, Virginia.
