Work Group to Develop a National Dispute Resolution System for Amateur Sport

TORONTO, January 5, 2000 - Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today announced the creation of a Work Group to develop a National Alternate Dispute Resolution System for amateur sport. This new system will ensure that athletes, coaches and national sport organizations have access to an independent and cooperative process to help them resolve disputes.

"This initiative is all about fairness," said Mr. Coderre. "I have set up this Work Group because I am deeply committed to having a fair and transparent process in place that will ensure a balanced relationship among athletes, coaches and national sport organizations."

The Work Group is made up of 13 members including experts in Alternate Dispute Resolution and representatives from key stakeholder organizations. It will be co-chaired by Bruce Kidd, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Health, University of Toronto, and Jean-Guy Ouellet, Professeur, Département de kinanthropologie, Faculté d'éducation physique et sportive, Université de Sherbrooke.

The process will involve consultative sessions with athletes and national sport organizations to ensure that the new system responds to the current reality of the world of amateur sport. The Work Group will also take into consideration the principles and processes that already exist in some provinces and territories and will attempt to harmonize processes across all jurisdictions.

The Work Group will begin its tasks in January 2000. Its final report will be submitted to the Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) by March 31, 2000.

Carter-Erdman Enters Hall of Fame

Albertan Kelly Ann Carter-Erdman (known as KACE) has been inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. KACE was a fixture of the Canadian women's national road and track team in the late 80s and early 90s. Besides going to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, she won 12 national titles and had a fourth place finish at the 1990 World Championships in her specialty - the pursuit. Congratulations.
