The UCI has released the country quotas for the Road World Championships, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 19th to 25th. For the Elite men, countries qualify by either their ranking in the WorldTour (as a nation or by having individuals ranked in the top-100), or by their ranking in their Continental Tour (as a nation or by having individuals ranked). The full listings can be found in the attached PDF.
Canada will be able to submit five riders to the UCI for the Elite Men's road race, and three of them will be allowed to start. This is because of Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Cervelo) being ranked in the top-100 on the WorldTour.
In the U23 Men's road race, Canada is not ranked high enough to gain spots through the Continental rankings. However, we are able to submit two names, and receive one starting position at this time. When the final classification of the Under 23 Nations Cup is released on September 12th, the UCI will make some last additions, however, Canada is not likely to gain extra spots.
For the Elite Women's road race, Canada ranks tenth, and can submit 12 names, of which six will start the race. In addition, Canada can enter Clara Hughes (ie, in addition to the six), since she is the Continental Champion in the road race.
For the Junior Men's road race Canada ranks 15th, and may submit ten names, five of whom can start. For Junior Women, all countries can submit up to eight names, of whom four will start.
In the Time Trial, for all categories, countries can enter four riders, with two starting. The defending world champions are in addition to the country quotas, as are the Continental Champions, so Canada will get a third entry for Clara Hughes, as the Americas TT champion.
