Windham, New York, site of the only U.S. World Cup in the last two years was hit hard by Hurricane Irene last weekend, with much of the town and surrounding area heavily damaged. A website to donate towards the cleanup and rebuild has been set up at www.windhamrebuild.org. At this point, the status of the World Cup for next year is still up in the air, with the UCI stating a decision will be announced 'shortly'.
Unlike most other countries, the organizers have very little access to government funds (such as tourism dollars) in the U.S., which makes it much more difficult to finance a World Cup. This despite the fact that locals said this year that the world Cup made a huge contribution to the local economy, as well as putting the region on the map internationally. This was the reason that the 4-Cross was cancelled last year. If Windham does not go ahead there is a backup location in Canada, believed to be in Alberta.
