Results from the second race of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
After a dry, fast conditions kicked off the first day of racing at the Exergy US Grand Prix of Cyclocross presented by Greenware, day two of the Planet Bike Cup brought a decidedly different day of racing, as heavy rains fell over Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, creating muddy conditions that would become a major factor in the elite races late in the day.
After a full day of amateur racing in heavy rain, the women were the first elite group to take to the course, just as clouds began to clear and the sun came out. French champion Caroline Mani took the Avid Shorty Ultimate Holeshot off of the line, but the Luna Chix duo of day one winner Katerina Nash and teammate Georgia Gould quickly moved to the front to control the race.
Just one lap in, Nash had pulled away from the rest of the field, with Gould riding alone behind her, keeping a close eye on the hard charging field. The muddy conditions caused the field to string out, as Nicole Duke ( Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) found herself alone in third with two laps to go.
Neither Duke nor Gould would be able to close the gaps, leaving Nash to solo to victory, with Gould coming in second and Duke in third. With back to back victories at the Planet Bike Cup, Nash wears the Exergy leader's jersey as the series moves to Fort Collins for the New Belgium Cup on October 8-9.
