Former Canadian U23 road champion (2010) Arnaud Papillon has admitted to using a banned substance, and been suspended from competition for two years. Papillon raced this season for the Garneau-Club Chaussures team.

While neither the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), nor the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) have formally confirmed the infraction, or detailed what substance or when it took place, Papillon's admission effectively concludes the process.

Papillon sent a letter admitting to use of a banned substance, and accepting a two year suspension, to our friend Guy Maguire at Veloptimum, which he has forwarded to us. The original letter was written in French and is included below our English translation.


Montreal October 18 2011. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has suspended me from competition for a period of two years. The cause: taking a banned substance. I do not deny the decision, I asked for it and I take full responsibility. I admit having done something unacceptable and I regret it. I apologize for the disappointment that I cause to those who trusted me, including my family, my coach and my team.

I want to say that recently that doping has taken place in my life. After many disappointments, I had almost given up everything. I tried to redirect my life but my love for the sport was bigger. After multiple personal confrontations with ethics, I faltered. I will live with it and learn from the results for the rest of my life.

Cycling has changed not only the athlete I am and I will always be, but the person I am. With strong values instilled in me the sport, and the unfortunate experience that I have to live with, I finally leave competition and begin another chapter of my life with the support of my family and my loved ones.

I wish good luck to all my former teammates and competitors. Cycling requires a self-transcendence which has no place for artificial glory. I beg you not to take this path.

Le Centre canadien pour l'éthique dans le sport m’a suspendu de la compétition pour une durée de deux ans. La cause : la prise d’une substance interdite. Je ne nie pas le geste que j’ai posé et j’en assume l’entière responsabilité. Je reconnais avoir commis un geste inacceptable et je le regrette. Je m’excuse pour la déception que je cause à ceux qui m’ont fait confiance, notamment mes proches, mon entraîneur et les membres de mon équipe.

Je tiens à préciser que c’est depuis peu que le dopage a pris place dans ma vie. Après de multiples déceptions, j’avais pratiquement tout abandonné. J’ai essayé de réorienter ma vie mais mon amour pour ce sport était plus grand. Après de multiples confrontations éthiques avec moi-même, j’ai faibli. Je devrai vivre avec cette réalité et les apprentissages qui en résultent pour le reste de ma vie.

Le cyclisme a fait évoluer non seulement l’athlète que je suis et que je serai toujours mais aussi la personne. C’est avec de fortes valeurs que ce sport m’a inculquées, ainsi que l’expérience malheureuse que je viens de vivre, que je quitte définitivement la compétition et commence un autre chapitre de ma vie avec le soutien de ma famille et de mes proches.

Je souhaite bon succès à tous mes anciens coéquipiers et compétiteurs. Le cyclisme exige un dépassement de soi où n’ont pas place les paradis artificiels. Je vous supplie de ne pas vous y laisser prendre.
