October 22/11 15:38 pm - CCA Responds to Agreda Doping Admission

The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) has responded to the confession by Miguel Agreda that he used banned substances (see Daily News October 21/11 22:46 pm - Second Garneau Rider Admits to Doping. Since the investigation has not been concluded by the CCES (Canadian Centre of Ethics in Sport) into this situation, the CCA is not 'officially' aware of the positive, and cannot make any comments. We also need to correct one aspect of our previous report - Agreda, while born in Peru, holds a Canadian licence and will therefore by subject to sanctions by the CCA.  A former member of the Peruvian national team who attended the Junior Worlds, Agreda has ridden with Garneau-Club Chaussures for the past two seasons.  He was also an engineer with Garneau Sports, and was terminated by the company following his admission.  Company founder Louis Garneau insists that, rumours to the contrary, Agreda and Papillon are the only two riders on the squad to have been caught using banned substances.

CCA statement:

The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) has been made aware of a doping confession attributed to a provincial level rider in Quebec named Miguel Agreda. Since the CCA must follow due process in accordance with the Canadian Anti-Doping Program administered by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), we are not in a position to discuss this matter until such time as the CCES confirms this anti-doping violation and renders a decision in respect of a sanction.

Until such time as the process that protects those rights of any athlete charged with an anti-doping violation is concluded by the CCES and the athlete is duly informed of a decision by the CCES, any other parties that are bound by this process cannot comment on this matter.

The CCA will await the decision of the CCES, should it be forthcoming, before providing any direct comments on this matter.
