The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) held its 2011 AGM in Winnipeg over the October 28-30 weekend. The event was 'enlivened' by the fact that a Comic Con show was also taking place at the same time, with actors such as Kevin Sorbo and William Shatner appearing randomly in the hotel. I knew that we had entered a different reality when a storm trooper wandered by me...
Below are some of the main points of the AGM; we will follow up with some more detailed analysis over the next few days.
Finance
The CCA is in good shape, financially, with revenues surpassing $4.7 million in fiscal 2010-2011 (and expected to top $5 million in 2011-2012). However, sponsorship revenue has declined, and the vast majority of this funding comes from federal funding sources (ie, Sport Canada). So, the CCA is working to develop alternative sources of revenue to allow for both flexibility of program funding (currently much is tied directly to specific programs or activities) and in case of a drop funds in current funding sources (always a possibility with government funding).
By-law Amendments
A number of amendments were put forward:
1. One more Director at Large be added to the Board, taking it to six from five, plus the President, National Team Representative and non-voting Past President. This was passed.
2. Term limits to be removed. Currently, the President may serve for a maximum of two four year terms and Directors at Large for three two year terms. It was felt that so good members were being forced out by term limits. This was passed.
3. Two additional Standing Committees to be established - Insurance Committee and Finance & Audit Committee. This was passed.
4. Geographic limits be imposed on how many Directors at Large can be from a single Province/Territory. Currently no limits and proposal is to limit to two. This was passed.

Also, Yannick Archambault, QC, resigned one year into his two year term, and the Board will appointed someone to fill the remainder of his term.
