Tour de Snowy Preview

National Coach Jacques Landry will be sending us reports from Australia about the Tour de Snowy women's stage race and the women's World Cup road race. Here is a pre-race report for the Tour de Snowy.

Well, another Tour de Snowy is on the brink of starting tomorrow and this edition will, without a doubt, be interesting. This gruelling 6 day, 9 stage stage-race has some of the world's best women bike riders lined up.

In the Canadian team you'll find Erin Carter of Team Elita, Sandy Espeseth, Geneviève Jeanson and Anne Samplonius; Sandy and Anne normally ride for Intersport of Peterborough, Ont. You'll also find a couple of other Canadians will be present in this international stage race namely, Odessa Gunn, riding for Timex and Fanny Larivière from Quebec riding for Team 2001.

The stage race has changed slightly from the past years in the sense that some criterium circuits were added; which is good because it becomes more of a team race overall. The stages are:

35 km criterium on the Saturday in Tumut

43 km road stage on Sunday AM from Tumut to Talbingo
8,4 km individual time-trial on Sunday PM in Talbingo

110 km road stage on Monday from Khancoban to Cabramurra

83 km road stage on Tuesday from Adaminaby to Jindabyne

35 km road stage Wednesday AM from Jindabyne to Thredbo
35 km circuit race Wednesday PM in Thredbo

97 km road stage on Thursday AM from Thredbo to Cooma
30 km criterium on Tuesday PM in Cooma

Of all those stages, the most determining one will more than likely be the Monday stage of 110 kms, where the riders will have to climb a total of 1500 meters to get up to Cabramurra. Some sections reportedly will require 39-23 to 25 gearing. From that point on, I would imagine that the top GC places will be established.

For the Canadian team, the riders to look out for will more than likely be Tracy Gaudry of Canberra who won last weekend's race fairly easily and has the Timex team geared up to help try and win Snowy. In addition to Tracy, Anna Wilson from Saturn will more than likely be a threat as well as Sara Carrigan and Juanita Feldhahn, both from the AIS-ACTAS team. As usual, the Aussies are on top form this time of year.

It will also be interesting to see who is racing just to get form for the World Cup race in Canberra on the 12th and who's there to try and win the Tour de Snowy, a now very international stage race...
