Tour de Snowy, Australia

Reports on Stages 6 and 7 from National Coach Jacques Landry.

Stage 6

The morning stage start was at 9h30 and the terrain the women had to ride was mostly uphill. With the situation for Geneviève Jeanson not changed from yesterday, the tactic was easy: keep Tracy Gaudry from going up the road. Because of the short stage and the only QOM sprint of the day at 17kms the strategy for Geneviève was to go on the offensive. At the foot of the QOM climb, thanks to good positioning by fellow teamates Anne (Samplonius), Sandy (Espeseth) and Erin (Carter), Geneviève lit up the pack and, of course, had Gaudry right behind her. In the hillclimb sprint our team leader took first, showing that she still has the legs to take on anybody.

Of course, after that sprint the group was down to around ten. At that point, attacks were being launched left, right and centre, with TIMEX taking on the chases most of the time. All this was great for Geneviève, she was able to follow and when the timing was right she put in few attacks but was brought back by Gaudy and her team every time.

So, in the end, the 10 women group was getting ready for the final sprint and Geneviève was well set in 5th place in the final 500 meters. Anna Wilson took it out and basically was not caught. Surprisingly, Geneviève showed that she can also sprint and finished 2nd, taking yet more time bonuses off of Tracy.

Stage 7

The afternoon stage proved to be a pretty tough one, with 8 laps of a 4kms circuit. In that lap the riders could look forward to a steep switchback climb of 1.5 kms

On the first lap Juanita Feldhahn from AIS took off solo and quickly gained 30 seconds. On the second lap, a group of 4 took up the chase with Anne Samplonius present to keep things under control for Canada. Meanwhile, behind the pack was rolling at a regular pace, with Geneviève setting tempo on the climbs, just to stay out of harms way. Suprisingly enough, Tracy never tried to attack Geneviève and so her plans of making things hard for Geneviève are still to come??

On the fourth lap, a small group of 4 took off after the solo and 4 women group. In this break was Anna Wilson and Miryam Melchers and they were closing fast on Anne's group of four.

With two laps to go, the 9 women in front were all together as attacks in the hill proved to be too hard for some.

In the end, the stage would go to Anna Wilson again and with her 1m30 lead she would take 3rd place overall.

For Geneviève, nothing changes on GC and, tomorrow being the last stage, control is of the essence...
