February 11/12 15:56 pm - Boivin Crashes in Stage 3 of Med Tour

The third stage of the Tour Méditerranéen was marked by yet another course change due to heavy snow. The planned 127 kilometre trek from La Seyne to La Londe les Maures was changed to a 110 kilometre Kermesse-style race over 11 laps of the finishing circuit.

The Team SpiderTech powered by C10 riders were extremely motivated to help Guillaume Boivin improve his overall ranking and drive him to the podium.

However, with only 20 kilometres to go in the race, and just when Garmin-Barracuda and Team EuropCar were starting to increase the tempo, Boivin was caught in a crash, flipping over his handlebar before jumping back on the bike and finishing the race in 20th place. Boivin was not injured in the incident.

Steve Bauer, Directeur Sportif for Team SpiderTech powered by C10, understands racing has risks: “We really had hoped for a stage win today, and maybe the points classification. But sometimes mishaps happen - that's racing. We're still really excited for tomorrow: Pat [McCarty], Lucas [Euser] and Caleb [Fairly] are riding very well and it will be good to see how they go up the Mt. Faron, to the finish line.”

Mt. Faron is a five kilometre ascent, rising from Toulon at sea level to 500 metres at the summit, with an average slope of about 10%. This stage of the Tour Med is typically considered the first major summit finish of the European race season.

More changes may occur tomorrow for the fourth and last stage of Tour Méditerranéen, Team SpiderTech’s first race of the season, as cold weather and a significant amount of snowfall are forecast on or near the planned route.
