Team SpiderTech just got stronger, thanks to the arrival of Brian Bach Vandborg, a rider with plenty of UCI WorldTour experience, including the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta à Espana.
Danish rider Brian Bach Vandborg, a rider with seven years of experience on the UCI WorldTour, has joined the ranks of Team SpiderTech and will add leadership and punch among the group of sixteen riders currently on the team.
“I’m definitely excited about joining the team. It’s still a pretty new project. Obviously the number one Canadian team and it’s still growing. I know the goals of the team and I really want to be part of that,” declared Vandborg.
Vandborg is a good friend with current Team SpiderTech rider Lucas Euser. “Racing with Lucas, I’m really looking forward to that. I just want to start racing,” added Vandborg.
This year, Vandborg is looking forward to racing the Amgen Tour of California, a race in which he finished 18th last year despite riding at the front of the peloton for the opening three stages working for teammate Juan Jose Haedo.
Vandborg, 30, has raced for four professional cycling teams since 2005: Team CSC, Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, Liquigas and, most recently, Team SaxoBank-Sungard. He has participated in six Grand Tours, including three times the Tour de France (2009, 2010, 2011), as well as twice the Giro d’Italia (2005, 2007) and once the Vuelta à Espana (2004).
“The arrival of Vandborg within our ranks will help to fill an important sporting gap for Team SpiderTech. He’s a strong all-rounder, with deep Time Trial abilities. He will certainly add depth and strength to pilot the team through hardest races, and will serve as a captain for our young team, bringing his extensive experience,” said Steve Bauer, co-founder and directeur sportif for Team SpiderTech.
Throughout his career, Vandborg has deep experience working for top GC leaders. Notably, he was critical component to Kreuziger's podium at the 2009 Tour de Suisse, where he was the last man standing with Kreuziger in the mountain stages, a race where he himself finished 26th overall.
Vandborg, a former Time Trial champion of Denmark, finished fourth of the 2006 UCI Road World Championships.
The experienced Danish rider is expected to shine in some short stage races, as well as some UCI 1.1 races.
Vandborg will first race with Team SpiderTech at the Dwars door Vlaanderen in Belgium, Wednesday next week.
