Sea Otter Cross-Country Update
Chris Redden telephoned in a report from the Sea Otter cross-country race. The riders are doing 2 laps of a very tough and long circuit, and have finished their first. In the men's race, Bas Van Doren (Be-One) has a 1:10 lead on a chase group of 5, containing Roel Paulissen (Team GT), race leader Michael Rasmussen (Haro-Lee Dungarees), Bart Brentjens (Subaru-Specialized), and Canadians Roland Green (Team GT) and Ryder Hesjedal (Gary Fisher/Saab). Behind them, another minute and a half back, is a group of 16.
In the women's race, Alison Dunlap (Team GT), race leader Laurence Leboucher (Team GT) and world champion Margarita Fullana (Subaru-Specialized) have 45 seconds on chasers Hedda Zu Putlitz (Be-One), Gunn-Rita Dahle (DBS World Team) and Mary Grigson (Gary Fisher/Saab). Chrissy Redden is in the next group behind, at about 1:30. The big surprise is Alison Sydor, who is well back in the pack. There does not appear to be anything wrong with her bike, so we don't know why she is so far back, although we were informed that she was going to be testing the new Cannondale cross-country full suspension bike, the Jekyll. Maybe the extra weight is slowing her down more than she expected?
