Dejardins Tour de Terra Cotta Race: Monday, August 6th
The 8th edition of theTour de Terra Cotta is fast becoming one of Ontario's premier cycling event for riders of all ages with racing opportunities for beginners to riders at the elite level. It is the largest Non O-Cup Race in Ontario and the platform for one of the largest Youth Races in Canada. This years event offers a guarantees prize pool of $10,530 which is the second largest cash purse in Canada. The winner of the elite race, with prize money going 10 deep, will take home $1000 for his/her effort. Prize money up for grabs in the 52km race will go three deep for all age groups with the race winner going away with $1000 ($750 for the overall win for the 104k event, plus their age group win + $250)
The winner of the 52km event will go home with their age category first place prize. This ranges from $75 - $100 depending on their age category.
Something that is noteable is that both 52k and 104 races have male / female equivilant prize money.
That means $1000 for the male winner of the 105k and the same for the female.
The Youth race run on the same day, is back by popular demand as an O-Cup event in the Youth Road Race and TT.
The Tour is a community-based nonprofit one day event and is sanctioned by the Ontario Cycling Association. If you do not have an OCA license a one day license fee for Non - OCA Members will gain you entry to the race.
The race resides in the tiny hamlet of Terra Cotta about 60km NW of Toronto in a rural picturesque setting and draws participants from far and wide. Record turn out of participants and spectators for this challenging race make Terra Cotta the pinnacle of road racing in Ontario. The race provides a festive family fun atmosphere in a beautiful setting. The Terra Cotta Inn location, which is the race start and finish, offers spectators and participants a live band, a beer tent, an expo, and a kids fun area in it's English style Gardens.
Ted Webb the founder and regular participant in the race had a vision for the Tour de Terra Cotta some 10 years ago. It has since become an intregral part of the community which strongly supports the race. The community in it's wisdom has made its pet project the raising of funds for the 1862 Heritage Building Community Hall restoration. Ted, " I originally pitched the idea of the race to community leaders who came aboard immediately." Ted's vision for the race is to create a European Festive atmosphere to be enjoyed by spectators, families and participants. With the help of community volunteers his vision is becoming an actuality.
