August 8/12 4:44 am - Cyclist Suspended for Testosterone Violation

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that cyclist Greg Cavanagh has received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The athlete’s urine sample, collected during in-competition doping control on June 10, 2012, revealed the presence of testosterone, a prohibited anabolic agent.

In response to the CCES’ notification of the adverse analytical finding, Cavanagh waived his right to a hearing, acknowledged the anti-doping rule violation, and accepted a two-year sanction ending July 9, 2014. The athlete is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport signatory to the Canadian Anti- Doping Program (CADP), including training with teammates.

Mr Cavanagh sent us the following statement:

I offer my sincere thanks to all those in the cycling community, friends, sponsors and others for all the years of camaraderie, support and friendship the sport has provided me.

It saddens me to retire from masters cycling under these circumstances but at 46 years of age my health and well being decisions will remain my priority.

Editor's Note:  As always, it is a sad thing when an athlete gets caught using performance enhancing substances, but encouraging that the anti-doping system continues to work as it is supposed to.  We applaud Mr Cavanagh for acknowledging the positive result and accepting the sanction.
