Antonio Piedra (Caja Rural) secured the biggest win of his career at Lagos de Covadonga summit, after 186.5km's that began in La Robla. The 26-year-old Spaniard attacked from a 10-men break on the final climb and crossed the line to take the win 2 minutes and 2 seconds ahead of Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r) and his team-mate David de la Fuente. The other riders in the break were Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Simon Geschke (Argos-Shimano), Kevin Seeldraeyers and Andrey Kashechkin (Astana), Vicent Reynés (Lotto Belisol) and Sergey Lagutin (Vacansoleil-DCM).
In the battle for the GC, Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank) attacked several times but he couldn't drop Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who was assisted by Nairo Quintana. Britain's Chris Froome lost 45 seconds.
Rodríguez leads Contador by 22 seconds on GC with Valverde moving up to third, 1'41'' down. Froome drops to fourth, 2 minutes and 16 seconds in arrears.
