Tour of Gila, New Mexico

A quick word from Helene Houle that Eric Wohlberg won the first stage time trial of the Tour of Gila. "The Tyrone Time Trial is a 15.7 mile out and back course with a total of 1070' of climbing. The course consisted of all ascent or descent with very little flat ground. He did this with a 58, I guess that's why some friends call him the big chain ring king!" Eric finished 50 seconds ahead of second place.

Cyclists Race Behind Hospital - Yukon

Sixteen mountain bikers took on the ups and downs of the Lost Lake & Hospital trails Wednesday night.

Racing on a short 6km loop filled with challenging obstacles and sandy descents, the riders were given the option of riding either two or three laps.

In the Senior Men's race, Ross Phillips continued his winning ways, storming to a victory over a hard charging Geof Harries. Jean-Paul Molgat was close behind the lead group, finishing ahead of Rod Savoie, Roger Armstrong and Paul Mason.

Robert Smith, who, with a time of 47:26, would have come third in the Senior Men's event, dominated the Junior Men's event. Glenn Iceton closely followed Smith, riding to a second place.

Patrick Ernst, who fended off a hard last lap attack by Jesse Whittle, won the two-lap Junior Men's race. Daniel Sessford rode to a strong third place finish, escaping yet another tight race between Chad Boorman and Ewan McDonald.

In the Senior Women's division, Michelle Rigoni rode away from Heather Preece in the first lap to take a convincing victory. Natasha Trovato, winner of the Junior Women's event, finished closely behind Rigoni.

14 year old Trovato, after one year of riding mountain bikes, is racing with the Yukon Cycling Team. She plans to attend several National level races these season, and one day, aims to represent Canada in the Olympic Games.

"I train hard and a goal like going to the Olympics gives me something to work towards", Trovato said.

Trovato is on her bicycle three to four days a week, combining speed and strength workouts with weight training. She races both road and mountain bikes, but enjoys the challenges of the latter more.

"I love everything about mountain biking. The downhills, the uphills, even the mud!" Trovato said with a smile.

Catch the fever of road cycling, randonneuring and mountain biking with the CAY's full schedule of events. The next race is the Riverdale Cycle 22km Time Trial, meeting at 12th Ave. & Centennial in Porter Creek on May 10. Registration for the race takes place at 6:30pm with a start time of 7pm.

The first Randonneur event takes place May 13, with the aim to complete a 200km tour of the Alaska Highway. Contact Christine Todd at 867-633-6745 for more details.

Mountain bikers can meet at 10am for a day of trail maintenance in the Chadburn Lake ski trails parking lot on May 6. Bring a lunch and your landscaping tool of choice.

Directions To Springbank Road Race - Ontario

Directions from Toronto or Windsor

Take 401 to London. Turn off at Wellington Street North Exit. While heading North on Wellington go through approximately 7 or 8 lights to Commissioners (there is a very large hospital at this intersection) Turn Left (West) onto Commissioners. About 4 to 6 km on the right will be Springbank Park. Marshals will be directing you to parking. Please also note entry on Canadian Cyclist dated April 28 2000 for more information about parking. It is under the heading Springbank Prizes.
