October 10/12 16:42 pm - USADA Releases Documents for Armstrong Sanction, Includes Barry Statement

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has now released, through their website, the approximately 1000 pages of documents that make up the 'Reasoned Decision' that forms the basis of their sanction of Lance Armstrong. These documents were submitted to the UCI and WADA as part of the process of stripping Armstrong of his seven Tour de France wins (and other results). Included among the supporting documents is Canadian pro Michael Barry's sworn affidavit as to his participation in a doping program at the US Postal team.

The primary document, the Reasoned Decision, is 202 pages long and is a detailed account of a systematic doping program by Armstrong and other riders on the US Postal squad. It provides explicit information, such as payments of over $1 million (U.S.) to Italian doctor Michele Ferrari (page 107), who had been investigated and convicted of sporting fraud by Italian authorities.

It is important to note, however, the entire case is based on testimonials of riders and team staff, bank records and analysis of past tests. Armstrong can (and has) still claim to have passed every doping test administered during his career.

The Michael Barry affidavit provides an outline of Barry's introduction to doping, and the pressure involved to dope if one wanted to stay in the professional ranks (and specifically on the U.S. Postal squad). Barry claims to have stopped doping after 2005, and to having left US Postal to get away from the doping culture there.
