Mount Tolmie Cancelled

One of the premier events of the Pacific Bike Fest in Victoria this coming weekend has been cancelled. The Mount Tolmie road race, site of the 1994 Commonwealth Games road race, was scheduled for Saturday, May 31, however, due to a decision by the Saanich Municipal Council it will not take place. Police and transit reports to the Council stated that they did not have enough time to prepare for the race, despite preparations being similar to the year before. Lister Farrar, Chair of the event, explained that there are new people involved with the traffic division, who did not feel that they had sufficient time. Fortunately, the Bastion Square criterium will take place on Sunday (June 1), with world mountain bike champion Alison Sydor of Vancouver scheduled to race. the start/finish is on Fort Street, between Langley and Government, with the elite racers competing between noon and 3:00 pm. Entry forms for all categories are available at local bike shops, and information can be obtained from the race line at (250) 595-4558.


The following letter arrived at our office yesterday from Outdoor Gear Canada (distributor of Gary Fisher and Pro Flex bicycles). We feel that it raises some very important issues.

An Open Letter to the Bicycle Industry,

We are very unhappy to learn that Gestev, the organizer of the World Cup mountain bike race at Mont Ste-Anne, Quebec is participating in a national publicity campaign with, and financed by RJR Macdonald, a major Canadian cigarette supplier.

The campaign provides for billboards (already in place across the country) showing mountain bike racers, an announcement of the Mont Ste-Anne event together with the name and logo of Export A, one of the cigarette company‚s Canadian brands.

The tobacco company will not have an on-site presence at the race.

Gestev has told us that this campaign has the approval of several sporting bodies, including the U.C.I., a fact we find particularly disturbing.

It is one element in a broader campaign RJR Macdonald has developed linking its cigarette products with six to eight „extreme‰ sports.

Our first response to this news was to inform Gestev that we would have no involvement, whatsoever, with the race and that we would urge other companies and individuals in the industry to follow suit.

Following discussions with Chantal LaChance of Gestev, we have received an assurance that the tobacco company will receive no publicity at the race and that in the future Gestev will refrain from any involvement whatsoever with cigarette companies.

On the basis of this commitment we have decided to participate in the Mont Ste-Anne race.

However, we believe this is the time to take a strong, unequivocal and public position opposing any links between the bicycle industry and the tobacco industry.

In the future we will refuse to participate in any event that has an association of any sort with the tobacco industry. And we will encourage other individuals, companies and industry associations to do the same.

We also ask that the U.C.I. and other cycling organizations put this issue on their agendas as soon as possible and refuse to sanction any event that has tobacco industry participation.
