The colder, windy weather on the roads between Rouyn-Noranda and Rollet did not stop several teams from breaking away from the pack. Indeed, a few cyclists attacked in the first kilometres of the race, but were finally able to break away after 30 kilometres of racing. Among these racers were Félix Lapointe from the Canadian team as well as three riders from Team Morocco, South Eastern Regional and Mid-Atlantic Development Foundation teams. They were finally caught at their arrival in town. After three laps of the urban circuit, team Mid-Atlantic racer Dakota Schaeffer won gold, followed by Hendrik Pineda (Team Canada), winner of the orange jersey. Team CF Racing rider Austin Vincent won third place, placing them on the podium for a second time in this Tour.
Despite the fact that they did not finish on the podium, the cyclists from the United States national team led the pack and controlled it during the duration of the stage. Always staying on the lookout for the racers from their main rivals, Team Canada, the Americans increased the pace during all the attempts from the Canadians to take the lead, thus avoiding an important breakaway. This strategy permitted them to keep the brown and blue jerseys, which are held Brendan Rhim and William Barta, respectively.
Saturday was the opening of the 15th edition of the Tour de la relève Desjardins. Aiming to promote the sport of cycling for youth between 6 and 16 years old, this competition is made up of several components, including road races, games of skill, the Sprint challenge, as well as a criterium. This year, the regional cyclists have been put in the spotlight by winning several legs, including the women’s Pee-Wee road race, won by Mathilde Berthiaume, from Rouyn-Noranda.
The seventh and last leg of the 45th Tour de l’Abitibi Desjardins will take place Sunday, starting at 3:00 pm at the Mont-Brun church. The racers will cover a distance of 43 kilometres, before ten laps of the criterium circuit in town, for a total distance of 97 kilometres. 109 cyclists will take this last departure, to finish this competition week on a positive note.
