Stevens Continues To Dominate Yukon Cycling

33 cyclists tackled the rocky roads of the annual Ibex Valley Relay on Sunday.

Although bikers usually encounter a variety of weather conditions throughout the race, including sun, snow, sleet, rain and wind, this edition rolled along under glorious sunshine.

The Relay followed the Ibex Valley's roads for 32 km; a path featuring wheel-grabbing ruts, seemingly bottomless puddles and sections of trail peppered in ominious rocks. The course then joins back up with the Alaska Highway, with riders pedalling another 22km to the finish.

The pace of the race was set by early leaders, Geof Harries, Scott Stevens, Ray Tucker and Stephen Waterreus. They broke away at the start, and continued their effort for the entire event. Deana Sabuda, Roger Armstrong, Bruce Todd and Scott Kerby followed closely behind.

Numerous blow-downs on the course, although cleared by officials earlier in the week, challenged many racers with intricate re-routes around fallen trees and brush.

Harries and Stevens opened up a small gap on Tucker and Watterreus, with the plan to ride together and push the pace as hard as they could. Mechanical difficulties hit Harries while crossing a waterlogged section, allowing Tucker and Waterreus to quickly pass.

Stevens was now on his own, determined to take yet another win this season. Disaster suddenly struck him as well, as the aforementioned blow-downs took him dangerously off course, allowing the following group of three to pass.

Wattereus took over the lead, with Harries in second and Tucker in third. Over a rough section of road, the group bounced over sharp rocks and roots, swapping places numerous times.

In an attempt to clear his own path, Harries jumped over a small section of rock and landed hard on his rear wheel. The tire instantly went flat, and he was forced to dismount. Waterreus, Tucker and a rejoining Stevens soon passed him, along with nine other racers, as he tried to replace the flattened tube.

The lead group of three rode together all the way into the road exchange point, with Waterreus' partner, and brother, Marcus, storming away from Stevens looking to capture the win. Stevens wouldn't let this happen easily, as he soon caught up to Waterreus, sneaking by him near the finish line by twenty seconds to take the overall title.

Meanwhile, back on the road, a battle was raging between solo riders and multiple teams. Bruce Todd had delievered a good exchange to his partner Buster Clare, who held off Denise Chisholm and Roger Armstrong to take second overall in the Men's Team division.

Chisholm clinched first place in the Mixed Team, with strong mountain bike efforts from her partners Sean McCarron and Michelle Rigoni. Deana Sabuda showed incredible form, finishing only 7:25 behind Solo Men's third place finisher Roger Armstrong, to win the Solo Women's event.

Alone in the Ibex Valley wilds for 15 minutes, dealing with a bent rim, rubbing brakes and a flat tire, Harries gathered his strength, refocusing on finishing the race instead of winning. He dug deep, thundering past 9 racers on the dirt and the road, to grind his way into second place overall in the Solo Men's event.

The CAY would like to thank all those who rode in this annual event, which takes much effort and hard work to organize. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all the volunteers, course officials and cooks who make this race possible.

The next event on the CAY calendar takes place this Wednesday night, with registration at 6:30pm and a start at 7pm. Road racers will meet at the Go Kart track and Robert Service Way to take on the hills of Miles Canyon.

For any cyclists competing in the Kluane to Chilkat International Road Relay, this event will be a great preparation for its' lengthy uphills and speedy descents. For more information, contact the Race Director at 393-4356.
