Most people in the Toronto area will know Eon D'Ornellas for his bike shop - D'Ornellas Bike Shop - in Scarborough, however, before he opened it 25 years ago, Eon was a member of what was arguably Canada's first pro road team - Bloor Cycle. He won both national road and criterium titles in 1986 and was selected to the 1980 and 1984 Olympic team (as well as representing his native Guyana).
In 1988 he opened the D'Ornellas Bike Shop and has been a fixture of the local cycling scene ever since, running a strong club program and continuing to cycle himself - telling me today that he still rides up to 600 kilometres a week. His daughter Lori-Ann and staff have taken over much of the daily operations of the store, but Eon is still in regularly, working on the floor and encouraging people to ride.
We have a few photos of Eon with his daughter and the scene at today's anniversary celebration, plus an interview with Eon.
Congratulations Eon!
