The HP LaserJet Women's Challenge
Zilute Fights to Keep Blue Leaders Jersey - Aggressive Longo Pushes The Pace At
courtesy Womens Challenge Media
Sun Valley, Idaho (June 10, 2000) -- In what some might think has become a two-woman battle, Diana Ziliute (HP Lithuania/France) was able to fight off Jeannie Longo's (Office Depot) continuous efforts to erode the three-minute gap separating them. Showing themselves to be the class of the field, the two riders again left the field behind in the final laps of the race.
I saw them go up the road and thought, 'Oh no, not again!' expressed Mari Holden, winner of the 1999 Women's Challenge Mountain Leaders Jersey. It was a super aggressive race from the start. I felt like I was chasing the whole time. Holden, along with Juanita Feldhahn (Jayco Australia) and Judith Arndt (German National), managed to maintain the pace until the last lap when they fell back into the pack.
The 18 lap, 28.8 mile Elkhorn Circuit Race presented by HP LaserJet Printers is not a race for sprinters. Each lap the cyclists tackle a one-kilometer wall. From the start, riders began falling off the pace and by the finish the lead group of 25 cyclists lapped half of the field. Longo was aggressive throughout the race making her final, decisive attack with three laps to go. Only Ziliute could match the Frenchwoman's power and the pair worked together maintaining a five second lead on the chasing peloton. Karen Kurreck (US National), current U.S. National Pursuit Champion, won the group sprint taking third place in stage three.
Even though the top overall standings remain the same, with Anna Wilson (Saturn) and Ceris Gilfillan (British National) more than thirty-seconds behind Ziliute, the race appears to be between Ziliute and Longo. The aggressive racing of this year's HP LaserJet Women's Challenge is showing on the faces of the riders as they enter what many would consider the most decisive stage of the event -- the Rupert to Pomerelle Road Race presented by Boise Cascade Office Products. Finishing at the Pomerelle Ski Lodge, the final 12 miles of the 56-mile race is a grueling seven percent climb which finishes at 8000 feet.
