The International Cycling Union has appointed composites engineer and sports scientist Dimitris Katsanis as consultant to the UCI Equipment Commission. A specialist in composite materials engineering and aerodynamics, Mr Katsanis has spent many years as a bike designer, playing a key role in cutting edge projects for National Federations, teams and manufacturers. As UCI Consultant, Mr Katsanis will assist the UCI review the regulations currently governing equipment.
"The UCI is in the process of modernising its technical rules and Mr Katsanis will be able to give us first-class assistance with this," said UCI President Brian Cookson. "We absolutely must ensure fair and safe competition but our regulations should not be rigid to the point of not allowing any technological development. It is a fine line and we are determined to get it right."
Mr Katsanis will work closely with the UCI Equipment Commission, which will be appointed at the next UCI Management Committee meeting to be held in Hoogerheide, the Netherlands, on January 31st - February 1st. Brian Cookson will head this Commission.
As well as having more than 20 years' experience in bike design, Mr Katsanis is a former international level cyclist, coach and UCI International Commissaire.
