Less than 24 hours after his win in the second stage of the "Driedaagse de Panne-Koksijde", Sacha Modolo (Lampre Merida) made it a double in Thursday morning's short stage, beating all of his rivals to the line.
The third day of the "Dreidaagse de Panne-Koksijde" stage race featured two short stages again: In the morning the riders had to cover 110 kilometres around de Panne, and in the afternoon an individual time trial over 14.3 kilometres concluded the race. The morning's stage was the last chance for the sprinters' teams, and they really went for it in the finale. Both Marcel Kittel and Kenny de Haes commanded their teams to the front to reel in the two attackers and neutralise any further attempts. The riders of Team Lampre Merida on the other hand opted to keep it low-key until the three kilometre-to-go banner.
>From that moment on Andrea Palini, Luca Dodi, Max Richeze and Davide Cimolai gave it their all to keep Sacha Modolo in the first positions of the peloton and out of the chaos that ensued. Indeed, and not all that surprisingly, there were a number of crashes on the final ten kilometres, but the riders in blue, fuchsia and Merida green managed to steer clear of those. As there was a tricky right-hand corner just 500 metres from the finish line, there was some pushing and shoving on the last kilometre. When battling for the best wheel to follow and the fastest line through that corner, Modolo and his lead-out man Cimolai showed all of their class, with Modolo diving into the last right-hand corner in fifth position.
On the short finishing straight Sacha Modolo outsprinted Andrea Guardini and Kenny van Hummel, the two fastest rivals on this morning, but this time it was a tight decision. Apart from getting his fifth and sixth personal win of the season, Modolo also managed to win the green points leader's jersey. For the team, these were the eighth and ninth victories of the still young season.
