April 11/14 11:33 am - Cycling Canada Announces Men's European Road Project

The Canadian men's cycling team is kicking off the 2014 road season on European soil this weekend.

Five riders will spend the next three weeks at Cycling Canada's base in Tielt-Winge, Belgium, competing in a series of national-level events.

The team is made up of athletes selected to the men's track endurance program through a series of training camps over the winter. The racing program has been designed to get them accustomed to a concentrated block of racing that is faster and more aggressive than they would face in North America, with the goal of starting the buildup towards the Commonwealth Games team pursuit.

"Racing in Belgium is ideal for this profile of athlete," said men's road development coach Luc Arseneau, who is managing this project. "We already know these guys all have big motors. Now we need to challenge them with some fast-paced events that will also hone their technical and tactical abilities."
