Road World Championships, San Sebastian, Spain Today the individual time trials for the Elite Women and Espoir Men (Under 23) were held at the World Championships in San Sebastian, Spain. Canada‚s Linda Jackson was a podium favourite, given her strong performances all season, and the fact that the hilly 28 km circuit suited her style. However, Jackson had to settle for a somewhat disappointing 8th - 1:21 behind the amazing Jeannie Longo of France (how many world titles does this woman have?). Jackson spoke with our correspondent Ed Schum after her ride, and said that the course was very tough, with strong headwinds a factor. Linda felt that maybe she could have been better prepared, but admitted that she was sick, and tired after a long, busy and successful season. For the `98 World‚s, she promises to review her schedule carefully, and prepare better. Having said that, there is still the road race to come, and Linda will be a favourite in that race. Canada‚s Annie Gariepy put in a solid performance to finish 35th in the same event. Canada had two men in the Espoir (Under 23) 32 km mens race - Mark Walters, who finished in 30th place (2:56 behind winner Fabio Malberti of Italy), and Guillaume Belzile (35th, at 3:23). Tomorrow, the Elite men do their 40 km individual time trial. Canada‚s Eric Wohlberg is scheduled to start at 2:57 pm local time, 21st of 47 starters.
