CANADIANS ADVANCE AT TRACK WORLD CUP IN TREXLERTOWN

TREXLERTOWN, Pa. -- Lehigh Valley residents Marty Nothstein, Marcelo Arrue
and Nicole Reinhart all advanced during the Friday morning session of the UCI
World Track Cup at Lehigh Valley Velodrome in Trexlertown.

Nothstein, the current world keirin champion and 1994 world match sprint
champion, won his quarterfinal in the men‚s match sprint, besting Sean Eadie
of Australia. The Trexlertown native moves on to tonight‚s semifinals where
he will meet Eyk Pokorny of Germany.

Arrue, of Alburtis, Pa., also moved into the semifinals by defeating Igor
Chtchelinski of Russia. Arrue, who placed fifth in the men‚s match sprint at
the 1996 UCI World Championships, will meet 1995 world match sprint champion
Darryn Hill of Australia in the semifinals.

Reinhart, of Macungie, Pa., moved into the quarterfinals of the women‚s match
sprint by upsetting Canadian Lori Muenzer in the first round (Muenzer won the Repechage to move on to the quarter-finals). The 20-year-old American will face another Canadian, 1993 world match sprint champion Tanya Dubnicoff, in the quarterfinals. Another American, Jennie Reed, of Issaquah, Wash., advanced to the quarterfinals by winning her repechage round. She will face Olympic silver medalist Michelle Ferris of Australia. The women‚s sprint event concludes Saturday.

In the morning‚s other event, Russia and the United States qualified first and second, respectively, in the team pursuit. The two nations will square off in tonight‚s final. Tonight‚s session will also include the men‚s points race, featuring Olympic silver medalist Brian Walton of Canada.

The Lehigh Valley Velodrome round of the UCI World Track Cup is the second of
six events used as qualifiers for the UCI World Track Championships, scheduled for late August in Australia. Thirty-one nations are competing in Trexlertown, the first time a World Track Cup has been held in the United States since 1994.
