Fly Gurlz Weekend Clinic - Ontario
(courtesy Michelle Ward)
The Fly Gurlz Mountain Bike Race Team hosted our second annual women's only mountain bike clinic at Boler Mountain on July 1 & 2. It was a team effort with everyone pitching in to make the clinic a success. Expert racer Sigrid Hynscht organized the event with the help of Michelle Ward, Team Manager. Expert racer Karley Cunningham designed the new Fly Gurlz logo which appeared on the Southpaw t-shirts given out to each clinic participant! Pro-Elite racers Heather King & Wendy Simms came for the weekend, along with Junior racer Dana Wagler and Vet Sport racer Heather Pardon!
We had the most awesome time teaching and instructing women of all ages and ability levels throughout the two days. The coaching ratio was fantastic with 1 instructor per 3 clinic attendants - this made for huge skill building and growth as the weekend progressed. All the bases were covered, from the basic skills to advanced technical riding. Angela Mawdsley and Dan Marshall lent their expertise with the intermediate and advanced groups, really helping to break down the fear factor of some technical sections at Boler! We were also fortunate to have Toronto Duke's mechanic Sara Beattie and Missing Link owner Steve Copeland come out to really get into the nitty gritty of bike maintenance and repair. Food is always a HUGE motivator when you are out on the trails and Chef Katherine Bourget took care of all of us with gourmet lunches and snacks! Swag was all over the place - prizes were given throughout the weekend with the finale being a Fly Gurlz team jersey!
By far the best part of the weekend were the new friends that we made. There is something magical and truly uplifting about sharing the joy of sport with others.
Fly Gurlz would like to thank the following people and sponsors for making this weekend one that none of us will ever forget!
