Franky Van Haesebroucke of the Navigators Cycling Team won the second stage of the 3-stage Dayton Pro/Am Series as teammate Vassiliy Davidenko placed 2nd in the overall G.C. This 3-day Saturn USPRO Tour event was contested as a stage race with a 5.4-mile Individual Time Trial, a 50-mile Criterium and a 90-mile Road Race July 7-9.

Shaklee's Eric Wohlberg won the ITT with a crushing 20-second advantage over the next closest competitor, Frank McCormack (Saturn), as the Navigators finished with 4 riders in the top-9, including the old-man himself; Team Director Ed Beamon. The Criterium opened with the Shaklee team trying to protect the lead of Wohlberg against an onslaught of attacks led by the Navigators team. The only significant break of the day, containing 1 rider each from Navigators, Saturn and Jet fuel, gained a maximum of 17-seconds on the field before being brought back with just 6 laps remaining on the .65-mile course. As the pace quickened, the Navigators team took control of the race heading into the sprint with Van Haesebroucke taking the win over teammate Vassiliy Davidenko, making it a 1-2 day for the men in blue.

The final stage-3 road race was contested on a windy course featuring a 15% climb at mile 14. As expected, the peloton went ballistic going into the climb with the field shattering into numerous groups on the hill. As the 3 small front groups merged over the next several miles, a break containing Navigators' newest team addition, Paul Kelly and 2 Saturn riders went charging up the road for the next 50-miles, gaining nearly 2-minutes advantage. With about 25-miles of racing left, the 2-Saturn riders were brought back as Kelly remained out front in a solo bid for the stage. As Kelly was finally caught, another solo attack by Navigators' Mark Walters went clear. Mark was joined 5-miles later by a group of 5 that included Davidenko, Saturn's Erin Hartwell and Harm Jansen, the Yellow Jersey of race leader Wohlberg and a Jelly Belly rider. This group stayed away to the end with Hartwell escaping alone for the victory as Navigators' Davidenko won the sprint for 2nd.

The overall G.C. went to Eric Wohlberg, followed by Vassiliy Davidenko and Harm Jansen in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

In other team news, Paul Kelly of Canada has been signed to the Navigators team for the remainder of the 2000 season. Paul is a young (24 years) up-and-coming racer and is a member of the Canadian National Team. His European and International experience will be an asset to the team in many of the hard single-day road races and multi-day stage races.

Russian Cyclists Killed/Injured

Olympic time trial champion Zulfia Zabirova crashed while competing in a local men's road race on Thursday July 6th as preparation for the women's Tour de France. When she fell she hit her head on cobblestones and is said to be in serious condition.

Russian cycling champion Alexander Khromykh and up and coming Olympic hopeful Nikolai Maksakov were killed in a car accident on Sunday July 9th. They were killed instantly when their car slid off the road and collided with a street light. Both riders had competed in the national championships that were being used to select the team for Sydney.
