A surprise attack, just 600 metres from the finish in Bergamo, by Daniel Martin (Garmin Sharp) earned him the win of the 108th edition of the Giro di Lombardia after 256 km. The Irishman was part of a select group of nine who were away at the entrance to the city. Martin took advantage of a hesitation by the other contenders, to launch an attack that was not to be answered as they sat and waited for "someone else" to go. The favourite, Valverde, finished second, with Rui Costa in third.
The finish of the bunch was marred by a huge crash on the final corner.
